Please Go Pick UP YOUR Papers!

PLEASE go the the circulation desk on the first floor of the library and tell them you need to pick up your work! (Your folders, etc. are in a yellow crate behind the circulation desk by all those shelves. It has my name posted on it and English 1010.)

Just show them your student ID and tell them you need to pick up the following:
1. Two folders with YOUR name on it (85% Essay folder and 15% Assignment folder)
2. Your FINAL RESEARCH JOURNAL if you turned one in.

You GET what YOU have EARNED!

I hate to even go here, but one last thing:
PLEASE remember that my job is to give you the grade that "YOU" EARNED.
I know that I grade on the generous side, so ALL of you should either be happy with your grade OR disappointed in yourself for NOT "EARNING" the grade you desired. Don't expect me to just hand you a grade that you didn't earn! Leave ME out of it! (I have to keep accurate records for the English department, so I have done the best I can with what you have turned in.)

1. Which piece of writing are you the most excited about or satisfied with? Which one most accurately shows who you are as a writer? What is it about this piece that you like best? (Be specific!)

2. What did you learn about yourself as a writer by undergoing the revision process? Was this a good learning experience for you? What do you need to learn more about or spend time practicing to improve your writing?

3. What are the most valuable things you have learned in the past seven weeks? Did you enjoy the class and would you take another class from this instructor? Why or why not?

*Other than that, I will be meeting with individuals about their research papers!

Oh! BTW ... Remember that as you do your research around your controlling question, you formulate your thesis by answering your question! (Flip the question into a statement!)
Normal Organization of paper:
Title (centered)
Hook & Opening paragraph
Thesis statement (what your paper is about)
Body of paper (Evidence that supports your thesis)
Conclusion (Tie it all together and wrap it up by restating your thesis in a different way. "Drive the point of your paper home!)

Changes For Monday, June 20th!

HERE'S THE DEAL! You NEED to come to class MONDAY, June 20th!
We're just out of time, so we are going to simplify things!

I'm postponing Rough Draft checks until Wednesday, June 23rd, but I hope you are making progress! Also, I need you to bring the following to class on MONDAY!
1. Your first 5 Learning Logs. (I have #6, #7, #8)
2. All Chapter responses that I have given back. (I realize I have some of these.)

This is what you will get back:
1. You will get your Summary/Strong Response paper back, so that you can do revisions.
(There also a handful of you who have Not written this type of paper correctly and will have to resubmit your work. There are also LATE Summary/Strong Response papers that need to be turned in!)
2. Each of you will receive a folders and score sheets for ALL of your work.

See you all tomorrow and BE ON TIME! (That's 3:00 PM!) It's been ridiculous! I'm on TIME; YOU need to be on TIME!

Using quotes in your paper

Guideline for using quotes in your paper:
1. How many quotes should you use in your paper?
There is no set rule, but the guideline for using quotes in your paper is about 1 per page. That means you are using quotes to back up what YOU have to say not vice versa. (DO NOT string a bunch of quotes together to form your paper. This is YOUR paper! YOU are the authority! Trust YOUR own voice and what YOU have to say! Again, only use quotes to back up what you have to say!)
2. Using credible sources and quotes to back up what you have to say, only strengthens your voice and establishes "ethos" in your paper.
(You are calling upon the voice of an expert who has knowledge on your subject.)

3. Use quotation marks around the content you are quoting. (DO NOT Plagiarize!)

4. If you paraphrase (put what someone else is saying into your own words but not directly quote) credit your source at the end of the paragraph by putting the author's last name in (parenthesis). This will also need to match a bibliography entry in your works cited page.

*5. If you quote more than 4 typed lines, set it up as a long quote by indenting the quoted material as shown in your text on page 648 in the sample research paper!

1. Remember every entry in your Works Cited page is double spaced, and if the publication information, etc. goes onto the 2nd and 3rd lines, use a hanging indention (control key & tab).

About Sources & Documentation

Connect the Body of the Paper to the Bibliography with Citations (See Allyn & Bacon Chapter 23, starting on page 626)

In both the MLA and APA systems, the writer places a complete bibliography at the end of the paper. In the MLA system this bibliography is called "Works Cited."

1. Every source in the "Works Cited" must be mentioned in the body of the paper. (You have been asked to find 5 sources total, but some sources may be more valuable to you than others. Only list the sources that you actually use. The purpose of finding 5 sources is for you to broaden your research, but if you only end up quoting from say 3 of those sources, list only those 3 sources!)
2. Conversely, every source mentioned in the body of the paper must be listed in the "Works Cited."
3. There must be a one-to-one correspondence (tagging system) between the first word in each bibliographic entry in the "Works Cited" (usually, but not always, an author's last name) and the name used to identify the source in the body of the paper (Introductory phrase or attributive tag).

Outline for Summary/Strong Response Paper!

*Follow MLA requirements: double space, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, 1" margins, indent all paragraphs. (You can put a heading on the top of this page, but single space your heading.)
*Remember there is NO exact or right way to write your response, because it is YOUR response. You just need to have an intelligent thesis in response to your article and support what you are saying in an organized way! (Follow the example on p. 127.)

Review for X-Men: First Class

Ok, here's my review of X:Men: First Class (Titles of movies are italicized.)
*All you guys will LOVE it!
First of all from a bias view (my 17 year-old son), this movie "blows ALL other X-Men movies out of the water!" He says it's less "corny" than the others. About the "Wolverine" movie, he thinks "Deadpool" ruined it, whatever that means?!?
As for my humble opinion, I'm learning to enjoy "Action" movies because my sons drag me along, and I refuse to be left behind. I liked X-Men: First Class and thought it was fun. James McAvoy (Professor Charles Xavier) was my favorite character for his belief in humanity and Michael Fassbender (Erik Lehsherr/Magneto) was just cool, and Kevin Bacon was plain ridiculously funny to watch.
But personally I liked Thor better because it had more of a fantasy factor as it focused on more realms in the universe. (Oh! And I love Anthony Hopkins for his depth and wisdom! And of course Chris Hemsworth as Thor!)
So maybe we NEED a class movie night! :)

Due Friday, May 10th:
1. Summary/Strong Response Papers!
In a folder turn in the following items in this order:
1. Summary/Strong Response Paper (Just single space a regular heading on the top of your paper.)
2. (2) RAPPELS:
(1) RAPPEL for the article you are responding to.
(2) RAPPEL for your response to the article.
3. A copy of the article you are responding to. (Underline or highlight any quotes you include in your paper.)
4. A "Double Entry" Log for your article. (Just follow the example on the back of your "Exploration Paper" handout.) (This is an easy assignment that forces you to identify strong points (with-the-grain) and weak points (against-the-grain) that will help you write your Summary/Strong Response Paper! I would do this assignment before writing your paper!)
*Your key to success is to pick something you care about and something you will want to expand on for your final "Exploration Research Paper"!
**Most importantly--TRUST what YOU think and TRUST your own voice! After all, this is YOUR response to an article of your choice! Don't make it harder than it is! Get a good attitude and have FUN organizing and supporting your opinion!

1. I will be meeting with select individuals to proofread your Autobiographical Narratives to improve your scores. You will need to bring a copy of your essays to class, so you can work individually in finding your punctuation errors.
2. If you were absent on Monday, June 6th, you need to come to class to pick up your Autobiographical Narrative. (Also, bring a copy of this paper.)
3. *If you got your Autobiographical Essay back today in class, just do your revision (due Monday, June 13th) and don't worry about coming to class. (Spend class time on writing your Summary/Strong Response paper that is due Friday, June 10th.)
